Key Background
Tesla has been making its way into India gradually, incrementally building up in strategic locations. Tesla took on its first Mumbai showroom in the BKC complex in early 2025. The showroom is located in a 4,003 sq. ft. area and is the top rent-generating commercial office in the nation at around ₹35 lakh a month. It was a behemoth milestone for Tesla in building a strong entry in India’s highly competitive automobile market.
After the Mumbai showroom, Tesla also planned to open a second showroom in Aerocity, Delhi, which expanded further in big cities. The announcements were made after a top-level meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, announcing the firm’s strategic vision for long-term growth in India.
Keeping pace with its expansion, Tesla is also hiring in bulk, with 13 openings in Mumbai and Delhi in the sales, customer service, and operations divisions. The recruitment is a public sign that Tesla is putting together a team of dedicated professionals to enable its growing business in India.
The new Mumbai office in Phoenix Marketcity will be Tesla’s India headquarters, and its location next to the BKC belt puts it right at the center of the company’s sales, service, and future manufacturing plans. Despite the fact that Tesla has not yet made any local production plans, opening the office is an indication of the company’s aspiration for greater penetration into the Indian market as part of the country’s vision for sustainable mobility and EV penetration.
