Adani Group Introduces India’s First Hydrogen Fuel Cell-Powered Mining Truck, Industrial Clean Mobility Milestone

Prime Highlights:

  • Adani Group introduces India’s first hydrogen fuel cell-powered mining truck, industrial clean mobility milestone.
  • The 55-tonne vehicle is driven by a 120 kW hydrogen fuel cell with a 200-kilometer range.

Key Facts:

  • The vehicle has three hydrogen tanks with zero-emission drives.
  • Adani to invest more than $50 billion in green hydrogen in the next decade.
  • This roll-out places India among leaders in hydrogen mobility for the mining sector.

Key Background :

It was under one of the decarbonization and clean energy schemes, when Adani Group launched India’s first hydrogen-powered mining haul truck. The 55-tonne vehicle has an operating range of 200 kilometers on a single refill of hydrogen and its drive power from a 120 kW Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell. It is India’s largest achievement in the push towards green mobility and the country’s overall government effort towards the realization of net-zero emissions.

Co-developed by Ashok Leyland and Ballard Power Systems, the hydrogen truck is a perfect case of high-end synergy of vehicle technology and hydrogen technology. Ballard contributed the fuel cell system and vehicle platform and technical integration were contributed by Ashok Leyland. Indian integration of foreign technology with indigenous manufacturing is one of India’s new strengths in green industrial solutions.

It contains three high-pressure hydrogen tanks on board, with optimal levels of performance and no tailpipe emissions. Built to operate in the strength of factory conditions, i.e., in mines, it can be utilized in carbon-heavy sectors in order to conserve emissions.

Vinay Prakash, Director and CEO, Adani Enterprises and Adani Natural Resources, termed the innovation as India’s era of hydrogen age in commercial transportation. He added that hydrogen technology can change not only the operations of the mining industry but also in ports, airports, and industrial enclaves.

The hydrogen truck initiative is part of Adani’s broader $50 billion commitment to green hydrogen development over the next ten years. The group aims to produce up to 3 million tons of green hydrogen annually, helping to reduce India’s reliance on fossil fuels and strengthening its energy security.

The project also gives an industrial pilot of green hydrogen’s use in India. Success on the truck has led to opportunities for revolution of an industrial system of transportation and logistics to a green, pollution-free era that has put India back on the world green energy map.
